Port of Spain, the capital of Trinidad and Tobago, has a history that dates back to the 1500s. The city was founded by the Spanish and was originally called Puerto España.
Early history
  • The Spanish built a fort in 1560 to protect a settlement on the site of the Amerindian fishing village of Cumucurapo. 
     
  • The Spanish made Port of Spain the capital of Trinidad in 1784. 
     
  • The British took over Trinidad in 1797. 
     
  • A large fire damaged Port of Spain in the early 1800s, but it was rebuilt. 
     
Growth and expansion
  • The city grew in size and importance in the 19th and early 20th centuries. 
     
  • The city peaked in size in the 1960s with a population of about 100,000 people. 
     
  • The city's population has grown to include a municipal population of 37,074, an urban population of 81,142, and a transient daily population of 250,000. 
     
 
Notable events
  • From 1958 to 1962, Port of Spain was the capital of the West Indies Federation. 
     
  • Governor Sir Ralph Woodford established the Botanic Gardens in Port of Spain. 
     
  • Woodford also opened the first primary school for boys in 1823 and the first primary school for girls three years later.
