Southern Exploration Adventure

Indigenous settlement
  • The earliest known settlement in the Caribbean was in Trinidad, dating back at least 7,002 years. 
     
  • The Barrancoid people settled in southern Trinidad and Tobago after migrating up the Orinoco River. 
     
  • The Nepoya, Suppoya, Yao, and Island Caribs were some of the groups that lived in Trinidad at the time of European contact. 
     
European colonization
  • Christopher Columbus visited Trinidad in 1498 and claimed it for Spain. 
     
  • Trinidad was administered by Spain until 1797, when it was ceded to the British. 
     
  • French colonists, especially from Martinique, settled Trinidad. 
     
  • The British expanded the island's sugar industry, which relied on African slaves. 
     
 

Sugar and cocoa industries 

 
  • The sugar industry was very profitable for English investors.
  • In the 19th century, the sugarcane plantations allowed for the cultivation of cacao.
  • Chocolate became a sought-after commodity.
 

Independence 

 
  • Trinidad and Tobago was granted self-governance in 1958.
  • Trinidad and Tobago gained independence from the United Kingdom in 1962.
