Piparo mud volcano

In 1997, the Piparo mud volcano erupted, causing widespread damage and leaving 108 people homeless. The volcano is located in the forest of penal and can be reached by 4x4 vehicle.

There are nearly 60 known mud volcanoes in the southern half of Trinidad, but many are inactive. Some of the other mud volcanoes in Trinidad include Anglais Point, Cedros, Devil's Woodyard, Digity Mud Volcano, and Erin Bouffe.

Mud volcanoes are geologically young and originate from thick clay beds at depths of up to 3 kilometers. They are not true igneous volcanoes and do not produce lava. Mud volcanoes can range in size from 1 or 2 meters high and wide to 700 meters high and 10 kilometers wide.
